Outdoor Water Features project by Greatness Landscaping & Construction on Long Island

The sound of moving water — without a pond to maintain.

Pondless waterfalls, bubbling rocks and small garden ponds — clean, quiet, low-maintenance water for any backyard.

What this includes

We design and install pondless waterfalls, bubbling boulder fountains and small disappearing-water features that give you the sound and motion of a pond with almost none of the upkeep. Everything is built around accessible pumps and reservoirs so service is simple.

  • Pondless waterfalls integrated into beds and walls
  • Bubbling rock and basalt column features
  • Small garden ponds with proper filtration
  • Low-voltage lighting integrated into the feature
  • Winterization and seasonal start-up

How we work

  1. 1

    Pick the spot

We choose a location you’ll see and hear from the patio or kitchen window, with access to power and a hose bib.

  2. 2

    Build the reservoir

Excavated, lined, filled with washed stone, with an access lid hidden under decorative rock.

  3. 3

    Stack & tune

Boulders set for the right sound, flow tuned, lighting aimed, and we walk you through start-up and shutdown.

Pondless waterfalls — the sound without the upkeep

A pondless waterfall is a recirculating water feature where the visible water disappears into a stone-filled reservoir below grade. There’s no open pond, no liability for kids or pets, no algae bloom in July, and the only routine maintenance is topping off evaporation and pulling leaves from the basin twice a year.

We excavate a 4–6 foot diameter reservoir, line it with EPDM rubber, fill with washed stone, and set the pump in an access vault with a hinged grate hidden under decorative cobble. Water cycles from the pump up through a hose to the top of the waterfall, cascades down stacked boulders, and disappears into the reservoir to be re-pumped.

Bubbling rocks, basalt columns and small ponds

For tight spaces or simpler installs, a single drilled boulder or trio of basalt columns gives the sound and motion of moving water in a footprint as small as 3 feet square. Same reservoir-and-pump construction underneath, much faster install.

We do install traditional small ponds (under 1,000 gallons) with proper biofilters, skimmers and the right plant selection for the South Shore, for clients who specifically want koi or water lilies. We’re upfront that maintained ponds need 20–40 minutes of weekly attention through the season — pondless features need almost none.

Lighting, winterization and long-term service

Low-voltage LED lighting installed inside or aimed at the feature is what makes water features magical at night — backlit waterfalls visible from inside the house, uplit basalt columns from the patio. We plan lighting at design time and integrate it on the same transformer as path and landscape lights.

Winterization is straightforward: pull the pump in late November, drain the hose, cover the basin. We offer a fall shutdown and spring start-up service for clients who don’t want to handle it themselves.

Outdoor Water Features — questions we hear most

Typical residential pondless waterfalls run $6,500–$15,000 depending on size, boulder selection, lighting and how far the feature is from a power source. Bubbling rock features start lower, around $3,500–$6,000.

A well-sized pondless waterfall pump draws roughly 200–400 watts and adds $15–$30 to a monthly electric bill if run 24/7. Most clients run them only when they’re home.

Moving water doesn’t — mosquitoes only breed in stagnant water. Pondless features and waterfalls are actually inhospitable to mosquito larvae.

Top off evaporation every 2–3 weeks in summer, pull leaves from the basin grate in fall, and pull the pump for winter. Annual deep clean of the reservoir takes about an hour.
